Monday we succumbed to Tourism and took the Zodiac Cruise up the Fiordo Ultima Esperanza and Rio Serrano. Attired in bulky bright-red Antarctic survival suits (they’re even buoyant), we blasted upriver on a sparkling clear day to behold the fjords, glaciers, peaks and assorted wildlife, including a Magellanic Hermit, all in the comfort of an inflatable boat. It was absolutely spectacular. And a nice assurance that we will still be able to witness beautiful sights long after our trekking days are over. Mass-tourism means getting herded around with lotsa other people, but it can be endured and it has no lasting side effects.
